“Prevent Blindness using Technology Solutions”
Teleophthalmology Service Provider
Welcare sets up eye screening services within existing health centers making them accessible to patients at high-risk for eye diseases (such as diabetes) which could lead to blindness. Welcare leverages new technology for the screenings and keeps costs low by having certified ophthalmologists working remotely.
Welcare was born out of a dire need for innovation in India’s eye screening space .In India there are nine ophthalmologists for every million people, as compared to the U.S., where there are 81 ophthalmologists for every million people. There are 60 million people in India affected by diabetes, of which one in every four people will have diabetic retinopathy, an illness which damages the retina due to complications caused by diabetes. Less than 5% of these patients gets screened by Ophthalmologists. This led the promoters of Welcare Health Systems Dr. Senthil and Dr. Malathi to turn healthcare entrepreneurs and setup Welcare Health Systems (WHS), an affordable eye screening startup. Literally, every person on the road needs to be tested for diabetic retinopathy.
Paediatric Vision Screening
Welcare also operates in Paediatric Vision Screening space, there are more than 350 Million Children in India and there is no formal eye screening system available in India to check these Children . One in Four of them can have an Eye Problem, moreover 4-5% of Children can develop a condition called as Ambylopia or Lazy Eye which if not diagnosed at an early stage can lead to permanent loss of vision.
